Questions- Pg. 73 and 80, 1-6

Page 73

1. The King finally sent a charter to the Virginia Company, or joint stock company, where investors bought stock, or part ownership in the company for future profits. The colonist where now able to move to North America. The colonist moved up the Chesapeake Bay River and settled in Jamestown. Eventually over half of the colonists died. Finally, John Rolfe learned how to grow tobacco from the seeds from the West Indies. He then married Pocahontas which made peace between the indians. Once Jamestown was a stable colony each town sent two burgesses to an assembly, which made laws for the colony.

2. The settlers came to North America to look for gold and attempt to establish trade in furs and fish.

3. They grew tobacco using seeds from the West Indies. John Rolfe also married Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan. Which made peace with the native americans.

4. So that the English could establish a base on the other side of the Atlantic, so the king could rule more land, and become more powerful.

5. Growth- 1.) Being able to grow tobacco and farm on their own land.
                   2.) Bringing women in 1619, " The plantation can never flourish till families be planted, and the respect of wives and children fix the people on the soil."

2. They left because they didn't like King Henrys new religion, and they just wanted to break free and set up their own churches.

3. Rhode island became a safe place for dissenters, it was the first place in America where people could worship freely.

4. Both of the documents were set up to provide a government.

5. 1.) English settlers moved on to the natives land without asking so, it became competition for control of the land.
    2.) Massachusetts sent people over to punish the Pequot for killing to of their men.
    3.) War broke out, and it destroyed the power of the natives and  in New England, leaving the colonists free to expand their settlements.

6. Lumber, Rum, and Furs.
