Study Questions for Chapter 1 - American Journey

1) Create a chart with a list of Native Americans according to each region. For this chart give dates (if possible) for the raise and fall of the group. Also, include major achievements of each group. 

People of the North- or the Inuit, Last People to cross over the land bridge in America, Able to survive in cold climates by making igloos, clothing made from seal skin and fur, Hunters and fishers.

People of the West- The Tlingit, Haida, and Chinook, They used the resources of the forest to live, built wooden houses, canoes, cloth, and baskets from tree bark, Fished for salmon with spears and traps.

People of the Southwest- The Hopi, Acoma, and Zumi, Built their houses form sun-diredd mud brick called adobes, Corn was their basic food, In the 1500s the Apache and Navajo came.

People of the Plains- Nomadic villages, Villages only lasted for a growing season, When they moved from place to place they dragged their tepees behind them, learned to hunt on horse back, and to attack their enemies with long spears, bows, and arrows, clubs, and knives.

People of the East and Southeast- The Iroquois and the Cherokee, lived near canada, Iroquois groups- Onondaga, Senca, Mohawk, Oneida, and Cayuga, In 1500s they made a leauge called the Iroquois Confederacy, Southeast grew corn, tobacco, squash, and other crops.

2) What is your general impression of the Americas before the arrival of Columbus? 
 Mostly indians surviving off the land. 







3) What groups formed the Iroquois League? When was this group formed and for what reason? 
The onondaga, Seneca, Mohawk, Oneida, and the cayuga. To form peace.




4) What are hieroglyphics? What Native groups used them? 
A writing that uses symbols or pictures to represent things, ideas, and sounds.  The mayans used them. 


5) What type of dwelling was common among the people of the Southwest? 
They built square houses called hogans. 


6) What was the first crop raised by Native Americans in Mexico? 
Maize 



REViEW FROM YESTERDAY - you should know and answer the following: 

1) What was the population of the Americas in 1491? 
Before columbus it was estimated 10 million, and after 50-100 million.


2) What advantages did the Europeans have over the Native Americans?              
They were immune to the diseases, had gun powder, and they were able to read and write. 


3) How did the crusades effect (or lead to) the discovery of the Americas? 
It brought the renaissance. Which brought wealth, and goods that the english didn't have. 


4) What did Europe want in the East Indies (China, Japan, India)? 
They wanted to make new trade routes, which could bring more wealth to whoever used them. 


5) How was Marco Polo important to the Discovery of the Americas? 





The book he wrote inspired people around asia and later inspired christopher columbus.

  1. #2 - Natives did more than survive off the land. Think about some of the great cities they formed.
