Civil War -Don't Know Much About History


CIVIL WAR:

How did the Civil War shape our lives today?
 


Name three ways the Civil War changed the South.

- No more slaves.
- Economy was dead, they had no more plantations.
- More racism, (KKK).


What constitutional right did Lincoln suspend?
- Habeas Corpus. legal action that a prisoner can be released from unfair jailing. 
     -Jailing someone, and not telling them why. 




List the four border states.
Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware.


Why did West Virginia form?
-Split from the confederate union. Politically split. People who wanted to go to the union could go to west Virginia.


What disadvantages did the South face?
The north had more people, more factories, and more money.


Why did the Confederate States believe they had a right to leave the Union?
They needed them for work. It would disrupt their economy.
They had the constitutional right to leave the union. (State rights)


What were the three main strategies of the Union?
1) Blockade the docks2) Get the Mississippi River
3) Take Richmond, Virginia 



What was the average age of soldiers who fought in the Civil War?
25, 21.





What was the outcome of Bull Run?
Confederate victory. Stonewall Jackson held his postition. First battle of the civil war. Led both sides to realizes the the war was not going to be won in one battle. 


Discuss the Battle of Shiloh.

Lower Tennessee, union victory. The confederates had a hot spot in the beginning. The death of Albert Sydney Johnson, confederate general. He leads a charge against the union. his death causes confederates to retreat. As one of the first battles, there are more casualties in this battle, than all the other previous wars in american combined. 

What were Lincoln’s reasons for the Emancipation Proclamation?




Political weapon. Didn't free anyone.


What did the 13th Amendment do?
Out laws slavery.

How was the Civil War a rich man’s war but a poor man’s fight?
The rich men could pay the poor people to go fight for them.
Manufactures in the north made a lot of money from the goods made for the war.

Discuss the importance of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
~Chancellorsville- Southern victory. Defeat Joe Hooker. Stonewall Jackson gets shot a killed. Stonewall is Robert E. Lee's right hand man. 
 ~Gettysburg- South invaded the North, by Robert E. Lee. Northern Victory. Three day battle. Fought in Pennsylvania. Turning point of the war. In the end Robert didn't have enough soldiers to fight. 



How did Sherman use “Total War” against the South?
He wanted to wage total war economically, wanted to shut down all resources the south had, Every where he went he tried to destroy everything.

Abraham Lincoln- Union 
Jefferson Davis- Confederates


What, exactly, did the Emancipation Proclamation do?

Cold Harbor- Lop sided. Grant sends men up, Lee blows them out. Confederates wiped out the union.


Sherman's March to the Sea-


Appomattox Courthouse- Lee surrendered to Grant. Let them go home, with their guns, and horses. Gives them 3 days worth of rations. April 8th, 1865. Confederates surrender. War is basically over.

What was the cost of the Civil War (both the financial cost and the cost in human life)

North- Cost- 6Million, People- 360,000
South- Cost- 3Million, People- 260,000
Total-             9Million,                620,000    3million people fought. 1in5 chance. 


What was the Reconstruction? How did the Reconstruction change the South?
A series of acts to punish the south. 



Why did the North win the war?
they out produced the south. They were more industrialized. The south was based on agrilculture. When the north and the south were marching, they destroyed all the souths land, where they need for farming. 



Why did the South succeed from the Union? What was the date of the first state succeeded?
They felt they had the right to run their state how they wanted. Control their own resources. State rights. 

They fought for slavery.
They were afraid of Lincoln. 
They didn't like to be told what to do. 


Why was President Johnson impeached?
